PERSONAL GARDENS - ANALYZING THE MEDIA TREND [PGM00 - V100-080915]
The fact that personal gardens are becoming a powerfully growing trend is slowly recognized even by the mainstream media. This is exemplified by recent articles in the Wall Street Journal and the L.A. Times, among many others.
Clearly, this trend is just at its beginning, poised to explode once the economy truly collapses during what could be called "The Second Coming of the Great Depression". We most probably won't have to wait very long to see this trend truly bloom, since real economic turmoil is just at the corner, waiting to take the stage just after the oncoming election.
Besides "psychological benefits", the fact that it feels good to do so, the core reason why you like everyone else should create and maintain your own Organic & Sustainable Garden is obviously because you care for your own health. But there is little doubt that there are even stronger economic reasons swiftly rising over the near horizon: Once people will have a hard time to pay for food, free food from their own backyard or rooftop is going to start looking extremely appetizing.
This is exactly what happened in other parts of the world in similar circumstances, a fact we have already illustrated here. And what already happened here in the USA in the past, when roughly 1/2 of all households had their own food-producing gardens during the "Victory Gardens" era of World War II, and again in the aftermath of the first major Oil Crisis of the early 1970's.
So we at optimalgardens.blogspot.com have decided to start doing a bit of meta-analysis -- analyzing the media trend itself, digging a bit into its message, how useful the information it conveys can be ... and what YOU could do based on it.
The latest example in this trend can be found in the L.A. Times on Sunday September 14th, 2008, and will be the subject of our PGM01 next post.
The text of these articles (usually without the accompanying pictures, unless they are essential to the comprehension of the text itself) will be reproduced here under "Fair Use" copyright rules, along with our relevant observations and comments. As usual, our articles themselves can be shared freely by you in an unadulterated form in any way or form you wish, according to our Standard Copyright & Licensing Rules, which do not allow unlicensed commercial use, for example in the from of for-profit publishing, etc.
These media pieces, (at least, the well-researched ones) are usually very interesting to read, both for what they say, and for what they do NOT say. We will try to analyze at least one a week here, till the end of the year, and all will be published under the PGM heading, standing for "Personal Gardens/Gardening & the Media".
